Imbalanced Moment Release Within Subducting Plates During Initial Bending and Unbending

Internal deformation within the downgoing plate in subduction zones to accommodate bending of as it starts subduct is reflected widespread intraplate seismicity. This seismicity, extending from outer rise and trench slope down intermediate depths slab, exhibits a wide variety focal mechanism types, often indicative accumulation recovery down-dip curvature through combination normal-faulting thrust-faulting earthquakes. In idealised case, where bulk internal recovered slabs descend straight into deeper mantle, we might expect seismic moment released both extension compression balance. However, number factors may complicate this: thermal, compositional, rheological evolution slab subducts, changes proportion accommodated seismically, whether undergoes any permanent deformation. These result intraslab seismicity unrelated curvature. Here, assess earthquake release settings around world, focusing on those systems with relatively simple geometries. Consideration several regions western Pacific eastern Indian Ocean indicates that substantially more seismically during than unbending, settings, significantly reflects compression. suggests that, although location clearly related curvature, there component permanent, unrecovered many subducting slabs.
